Shakti Sharma Makes History as First Non-Medical Woman Two-Star Officer

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has created a significant milestone in the history of India’s Armed Forces by becoming the first woman officer from a non-medical branch to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal, equivalent to a two-star rank in the Army and Navy.

Sharma assumed charge as the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters on September 1, 2026. Her elevation is notable because women had previously reached two-star and higher ranks in the Indian military primarily through the medical and nursing services. Sharma’s achievement marks a breakthrough for women officers serving in the regular, non-medical branches of the armed forces.

A career spanning more than three decades

Sharma was commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994. Over the course of more than three decades, she has served in a range of assignments covering training establishments, field stations, Command Headquarters and Air Headquarters.

Her career has also included work aimed at strengthening the relationship between military education and leading academic institutions. She played an important role in establishing IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University, initiatives intended to encourage academic engagement and strategic defence-related collaboration.

Another first in her career

Her latest achievement follows another important distinction. Sharma became the first woman officer from the three services to command a Sainik School, serving as Principal of Sainik School Kapurthala.

That experience added an important leadership dimension to her career, combining military service with responsibility for education, institutional development and the preparation of young students for future leadership roles.

Why the promotion matters

Sharma’s elevation comes at a time when the role of women in India's military is expanding beyond traditionally established areas. Women are increasingly taking on longer careers and senior responsibilities across different branches of the armed forces.
