Russian Missile Strike Hits ArcelorMittal Steel Plant in Ukraine

A Russian missile strike hit the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih steel and mining complex in central Ukraine during overnight attacks on August 16, killing two people and injuring at least 13 employees and contractor workers, according to the company. Ukrainian authorities reported a slightly higher injury figure of 14 as the response operation continued.

The attack caused damage to important parts of the industrial complex, including facilities connected to power generation and blast-furnace operations. The company activated its emergency response procedures and temporarily suspended some production while engineers and specialists began examining the damage.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is one of Ukraine’s largest industrial enterprises and a major producer of steel and mining products. The facility is owned by ArcelorMittal, the global steel group associated with Indian-born billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

The impact is significant because steel production depends heavily on a stable supply of electricity and continuous operation of high-temperature equipment. Damage to power systems or blast-furnace infrastructure can therefore affect production beyond the immediate area of the strike. The company said specialists would determine the scale of the damage and the time required for repairs.

The latest attack also comes against the backdrop of a wider escalation in aerial strikes. Russia carried out missile and drone attacks across several Ukrainian locations, while Ukraine launched a large-scale drone offensive against targets inside Russia. The exchanges included attacks on industrial and economic infrastructure on both sides.

For Ukraine, the strike is another blow to an industrial sector that has already faced repeated wartime disruptions, energy shortages and infrastructure damage. For ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the immediate priority is assessing the condition of the damaged equipment, supporting injured workers and determining when affected production units can safely return to operation.
