PM Modi Praises Pilot Smit Machchhar After Mid-Air Attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his courage and quick thinking during a serious mid-air incident involving a flydubai passenger aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The pilot reportedly fought back after being attacked by his co-pilot, helping prevent a potentially catastrophic situation.

According to reports, the incident occurred on September 30, 2026, when the aircraft was flying over the region. The co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar and attempted to take control of the situation in a way that threatened the aircraft's safety. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar reportedly resisted the attack and managed to open the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew and passengers to intervene.

The aircraft was subsequently taken over by two other pilots who were travelling onboard as relief crew. They diverted the flight to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Captain Machchhar was taken to hospital for medical treatment following the incident.

On October 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly commended the Indian captain's actions, highlighting his courage and determination to protect the lives of those onboard. Modi said Machchhar's actions had helped avert a tragedy comparable to the September 11 attacks and expressed his wishes for the pilot's speedy recovery. The Prime Minister also reached out to Machchhar's family to express his support.

Captain Machchhar's actions have also drawn praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who acknowledged the Indian pilot's bravery and his role in preventing a potential disaster. The incident has brought international attention to the importance of quick decision-making, crew coordination and emergency response in aviation.

While the pilot's actions have received widespread recognition, the precise circumstances and motive behind the alleged attack remain subject to investigation. Flydubai has urged caution against speculation as authorities work to establish the full details of the incident.
