A massive flash flood has devastated northern Nepal near the Tibet border, damaging communities, roads and infrastructure as rescue teams search for missing people amid difficult mountain conditions.
A catastrophic flash flood has torn through northern Nepal near the border with Tibet, leaving at least 160 people dead and hundreds more missing as rescue teams search devastated mountain valleys.
The disaster struck on August 26, 2026, after a massive collapse involving glacier ice, rock and debris high in the Himalayas. The resulting surge rushed down river valleys, triggering destructive flooding and mudflows across the border region.
In Nepal, the worst damage has been reported in and around Rasuwa and nearby districts, where communities, roads, bridges and other infrastructure were overwhelmed. Authorities have also reported large numbers of missing visitors, including foreign tourists and pilgrims travelling through the Himalayan region.
Across the border in Tibet's Gyirong County, landslides and flooding have also caused deaths, disappearances and major disruption to roads and communications.
The event was initially associated with a possible earthquake after seismic activity was detected. However, further analysis indicated that the seismic signal was generated by the enormous landslide and glacial collapse itself, highlighting the extraordinary scale of the event.
Rescue operations are continuing in difficult conditions, with damaged roads, unstable slopes, powerful river currents and thick mud making access to some areas extremely challenging. The number of casualties and missing people may change as search teams reach isolated locations.
The disaster is also drawing attention to the growing danger of unstable glaciers and mountain slopes across the Himalayas. As temperatures rise, scientists have warned that glacier retreat, melting ice and thawing mountain terrain can increase the risk of sudden collapses, debris flows and destructive floods.
Authorities are continuing emergency operations and monitoring rivers downstream as the full scale of the disaster becomes clearer.
