NEET-UG: SC Pushes Lasting NTA Reforms

The Supreme Court has renewed its focus on long-term reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA), stressing that changes in the examination system must be institutionalised rather than handled through temporary or ad-hoc measures.

During the hearing on NEET-UG reforms, the Court sought a detailed account from the Centre and the NTA on the progress made in implementing recommended changes. The focus is on building a stronger and more reliable examination framework with dedicated infrastructure, manpower, technology and security systems.

The Court has also sought clarity on reforms covering the entire examination cycle—from pre-exam preparations and question-paper handling to examination centres, transportation, testing methods and post-exam processes. Issues such as computer-based testing, cybersecurity and data protection are also part of the wider reform discussion.

The Supreme Court’s message is clear: reforms should not disappear after a controversy fades. The emphasis is on creating a system capable of retaining institutional knowledge and maintaining continuity, so that improvements do not depend on fresh committees or short-term responses after every crisis.

The Centre has outlined several security measures, including safeguards in question-paper preparation and GPS tracking of vehicles used for transportation. The Court, however, continues to press for a broader institutional overhaul and has sought details on how expert recommendations are being translated into lasting changes.

As scrutiny of the NEET-UG examination system continues, the next phase of the reform process will be judged not only by new proposals but by how effectively they are embedded into the NTA's long-term functioning.
