Mecca Alert: Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drone Near Holy City
Saudi Arabia says its air defenses intercepted a suspected Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered the holy city’s restricted airspace. The incident triggered an aerial-threat alert in Mecca, while the Houthis denied targeting the Islamic holy city. The development comes amid rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement.
Saudi Arabia has reported intercepting a drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening, September 15, before the aircraft entered the restricted airspace surrounding the holy city. Saudi officials have attributed the drone to Yemen’s Houthi movement.
According to the Saudi-led coalition, the drone was detected and destroyed at around 6:50 p.m. local time. Officials said debris from the aircraft fell south of Mecca, with no indication that the drone reached the city’s prohibited airspace.
The incident prompted a security alert in Mecca and comes amid a wider escalation involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Saudi authorities have stressed that the protection of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims remains a major security priority.
The Houthi movement, however, has rejected Saudi Arabia’s accusation, saying it did not target Mecca or other Islamic holy sites. This means the responsibility for the attempted drone strike remains disputed between the two sides.
Saudi officials have also linked the latest incident to a previous 2017 missile incident that they described as an earlier attempt to target Mecca. The latest episode has added another layer of tension to the rapidly developing Saudi-Houthi conflict.
Key point for the news post: It is more accurate to say “drone intercepted near/south of Mecca” rather than “drone attack on Mecca,” because Saudi Arabia says the drone was destroyed before entering the city's restricted airspace, while the Houthis deny targeting the holy city.
