Iran Signals New War Strategy After Fresh US Strikes Near Hormuz

Iran has signalled a broader strategy in its escalating conflict with the United States following a fresh round of American strikes near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Mohsen Rezaei, the recently appointed head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned that Tehran’s next phase of its response would extend beyond direct military action. He said Iran’s approach would involve the battlefield, diplomacy and measures aimed at countering the economic pressure imposed by Washington.

The warning came after the United States carried out strikes against Iranian military assets near the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials said the operation targeted military infrastructure, including air-defence, radar and maritime assets, while Washington has also sought to prevent Iran from threatening commercial shipping in the waterway.

Iran subsequently launched missiles and drones toward locations hosting U.S. forces and American allies in the region. Kuwait and Bahrain also reported coming under attack, highlighting the risk that the confrontation could spread beyond the immediate U.S.-Iran battlefield.

The Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the confrontation because it is a critical route for global energy shipments. The renewed fighting has already increased uncertainty in oil markets, with Brent crude rising to around $95 a barrel, according to Associated Press reporting.

Iran is also facing significant economic pressure. U.S. sanctions and the naval blockade have intensified the strain on Tehran, while the Iranian rial has fallen sharply. This makes the economic dimension of Iran’s newly announced strategy particularly significant.

The latest escalation follows a period of relative calm between the two sides. The renewed exchange of attacks has raised concerns that the conflict could enter another prolonged phase of military confrontation, while diplomatic efforts remain uncertain.

For now, Tehran has not publicly provided a detailed operational blueprint for its “new strategy.” Rezaei’s comments therefore signal a broader policy direction rather than a clearly defined military plan. The coming days will show whether Iran translates the warning into new actions involving military operations, negotiations or economic countermeasures.
