Delhi Students Protest After Teen Reports Alleged Gang Rape
Hundreds of students protested in New Delhi after a 17-year-old girl reported an alleged gang rape by three men in a South Delhi park. The demonstration highlighted concerns over women’s safety, policing and security around educational institutions as authorities continued investigating the case.
NEW DELHI, September 24, 2026 — Hundreds of students gathered in New Delhi on Wednesday to demand stronger protection for women after a 17-year-old girl reported that she had allegedly been gang-raped by three men in a park in South Delhi.
The protest took place near Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), around two kilometres from the reported crime scene. Students marched with placards and raised slogans calling for greater security, police action and the freedom for women to travel and go out without fear.
What happened
According to police information reported by Reuters, the teenager said three men approached her and allegedly posed as police officers before the reported assault at a park in the national capital.
Police subsequently detained suspects in connection with the case. One suspect was shot and apprehended by police on September 22, while two other suspects, who are brothers, were being questioned, according to senior police officer Vijay Kumar.
Other Indian media reports identified the location as Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir and reported that the accused allegedly used the appearance of police authority to intimidate the girl and her companion. Details concerning the precise sequence of events remain part of the investigation.
Why students protested
The incident caused particular concern among students because of its proximity to LSR and other educational institutions in the area.
LSR suspended physical classes after the shooting near the campus caused anxiety among students. College authorities said student safety and well-being were the priority and sought greater police presence around the campus.
Students from LSR and other institutions joined the solidarity march. Their concerns extended beyond the individual case, with protesters raising broader questions about lighting, surveillance, policing and safety around college campuses and public spaces.
Investigation and competing claims
Police are continuing to investigate the allegations and the role of the suspects. The father of the two brothers being questioned was quoted in local media as saying that his sons had been framed. Reuters said it had not immediately established the response of the arrested suspect to the allegations.
Because the case is still under investigation, the allegations should not be presented as established facts, and the suspects remain entitled to due process.
Wider concern over sexual violence
The Delhi protest has also brought renewed attention to the wider problem of sexual violence in India. Reuters, citing National Crime Records Bureau data, reported that more than 80 rape cases are reported to police across India each day. Activists have argued that the actual scale of sexual violence may be higher because some incidents are never reported.
The issue has been particularly prominent in Delhi since the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman triggered nationwide protests and contributed to significant changes in India's criminal law, including tougher penalties and provisions intended to speed up trials.
The latest Delhi case has therefore become both a criminal investigation and a focus of public concern about women's safety in parks, streets and areas surrounding educational institutions.
Important: The identity of the teenage survivor should not be published, and reporting should avoid details that could reveal her identity.
