China Urges Steady India Ties, Warns Against ‘Backsliding’

China has called for continued progress in its relations with India, stressing the need to maintain stability and avoid a return to tensions or setbacks. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the two countries should work to move bilateral ties forward “without backsliding,” signalling Beijing’s emphasis on sustaining recent efforts to improve relations.

The remarks come as India and China seek to stabilise ties following years of strained relations. Both sides have been working to maintain dialogue and address outstanding differences while exploring ways to improve diplomatic and economic engagement.

China’s message highlights the importance Beijing places on preserving the current momentum in bilateral relations. At the same time, major issues between the two countries remain, meaning continued diplomatic engagement will be crucial to prevent renewed tensions.

For India, stable relations with China are important not only for regional security but also for trade, economic cooperation and broader Asian geopolitics. Wang’s comments therefore indicate that Beijing wants the relationship to remain on a forward trajectory rather than return to the tensions of previous years.
