9 SIM Limit: Rules Tighten From August 24

The government is tightening the enforcement of mobile connection rules. From August 24, 2026, telecom operators must reject applications for a new mobile connection if a subscriber already has nine SIMs registered in their name.

The nine-connection ceiling is not a newly introduced limit. What changes now is the enforcement mechanism. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed operators to put technical and organisational systems in place to identify customers who have already reached the permitted limit.

The Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) will be used to help telecom companies check subscriber records across operators. From August 23, information related to subscribers who have reached the prescribed limit will be available to support these checks.

If an additional connection is issued beyond the permitted limit, the latest connection may face suspension under the compliance process. The move is aimed at improving oversight of mobile connections and reducing their misuse in fraud and other illegal activities.

For most individuals, the maximum remains nine mobile connections across telecom operators and service areas. Existing rules provide a lower limit of six connections in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and the North-East licensed service areas.

The key message for consumers: if you already have the maximum number of SIMs registered in your name, you will not be able to get another connection unless you first bring the total below the permitted limit.
